Happy Autumn equinox! Before we dive into this week’s post, I want to address the elephant in the room: the semi-fudged first-ever post I published last week. Although the post is a lovely read, I looked like a total newb when I blasted the newsletter with nothing but broken links. As if that weren’t enough, I added a “pledge your support” banner thinking it was a “subscribe” button. Basically, I barely introduced myself and I immediately asked for a big ass tip. So very Vancouver of me, and for that, I’m sorry.
I am just a boy standing in front of a black mirror asking strangers to love him.
Now let’s move on to the business at hand: The Séance TV Guide.
Remember when TV shows used to have more defined seasons? When each season had at least 20 episodes (sometimes more), and they released them one by one every week? In my opinion, this weekly episode cadence was perfect! You couldn’t binge-watch the entire thing, which meant: you had to actually make time for it. It fully served intentional, scheduled entertainment.
I’ve been around the digital block long enough to know how chaotic everything becomes once you join a new social media thingy. The inevitable Ouroboros content trap that sucks you in: You start making content and it’s fun “OMG, crushing itttt” You then start to take off “Wow, 2 new subscribers!? Move the f*ck over Hak Tuah!”, But then all of the sudden, it becomes this horrendous chore that exists solely for the purpose of keeping the algorithm happy. It’s inevitable — unless — you change the strategy? (question mark on purpose). That’s something I want to try this time around. Instead of feeding the blackhole of doom that is the algorithm, I want to have a different approach to it, one that feels good. Enter my TV show and magazine editor fantasy.
So here’s how it will work:
- I will publish 2 seasons per year: Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer, and that’s it baby.
- A post will be shared at the beginning of each season to let you’ll know what’s up. All teaser titles will be included.
- I’ll sprinkle surprise posts in between to keep things spicy, cuz you know? Love is a full-time job.
This hybrid type of TV show / bi-annual publication strategy should keep things real, consistent, and fun. It will also play into my most inner homo-cosplay of SATC. Carrie with a moustache (me), sitting by a window, typing away at the season ahead “I couldn’t help but wonder: is this hybrid TV guide approach going to keep me out of my digital mexicoma?” Well it better work, cuz I’m too old to handle yet another algo-tantrum.
So, without further ado — DRUM ROLL PLEASE — here’s this season’s guide!
SEASON 1: STARTING SEPTEMBER 29TH
A season of travel and wellness with design in mind.
To kick off this first season, I traveled to the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico to find the best spots that bring together culture, food, wellness, and design all under one roof.
- S1.1 The House for Design and Wellness: Casa Escuela
- S1.2 Escaping Winter Woes: A Tiny Refuge in the Mexican Jungle
- S1.3 Curated Spaces: A House in Mérida for Creative Travelers.
- S1.4 Earth and Clay: A Family of Mexican Ceramicists Keeping Their Culture Alive
As creatives, we have to replenish the well that feeds our ideas, and there’s no better way to do this than to visit the house and studio of one of your favourite artists. So, I headed down to New Mexico with one of my besties to visit the home (and surrounding areas) of Georgia O’Keeffe.
- S1.5 The House and Studio of Georgia O’Keeffe in Abiquiu.
- S1.6 Taos Pueblo: Simplicity, Nature, and Community.
And finally, we can’t talk about design without including Denmark. I know we are all obsessed with Copenhagen, but there’s more to see outside of this famed scandi capital. Thanks to some very kind friends, I got to visit the Danish countryside, which is just as magical as it sounds.
- S1.7 Art Paradise: A Hidden Sculptural Museum in the Danish Countryside.
- S1. 8 Grounds for Inspiration: A Castle’s Colour Palette and Lavish Textures.
- S1.9 House of Finn Juhl: Architecture and Nature for Design Lovers.
And obviously, I’m going to have a few sprinkles of other surprises in between. Ooof! I can’t wait to feed you all this content.
And now — in the eloquent words of miss Goop — there we go guys, it’s time for me to get in bed, this has been fun. Read you next week!
Gab.
👏👏👏 I’m excited for all of it.
